A brief introduction

I have been creative all my life. After graduating from my course in Art, Fabric Design and Fashion Design, I worked in several branches of the textile industry, such as, teaching courses on Textiles, Fabric Design and Feltmaking, as well as working on stage costumes. Later on, I changed direction somewhat and spent a number of years working as a free-lance Graphic Designer. I apply what I believe is important from my work in Graphic Design to my felt designs, such as, a conscious choice of colour, stark and austere shapes, as well as a spot of humour!

Felt

My first book on felt, entitled, Vilt zelf maken, was published in 1986. At that time, although there were people in the Netherlands who were working with felt, feltmaking had not yet become all the rage. The only wool available at that time was the wool, which was taken directly from the sheep and which was difficult to felt. And, of course, the wool in those days was certainly not available in such a wide range of spectacular colours as the felting wool of today! Making felt was quite a strenuous job in those days and people simply did not fancy this as a hobby.

However, these days, you can do so much more with the wool, which is now available. Felting has become ever so easy to do! And because of this, I was inspired to produce this book, describing a whole range of objects in various shapes and colours. The title of this book, Falling for Felt, is evidence of my own enthusiasm, which I hope will inspire others to fall for felt, too!
